The art of ropemaking within our family originated in the 1920s where our farmer Charlie Phillips was making rope for his farm in northern Victoria out of necessity. With droughts and the Great Depression, times were tough on the land, and you had to be able to make do. Shops and supplies were 50 miles away, so he taught his 2 sons all he knew, handing on his farming skills and basic wooden rope making tools.
His son Fenton also farmed, becoming a Dairy farmer, and later in life in his spare time he would demonstrate ropemaking at Agricultural Shows, engine displays.
Now the Ropemaking tradition has been carried on by Tim, wife Rebecca and their children Amelie and Fenton Jnr with the children becoming the 4 generation to be involved with Ropemaking.
